The goal of this DBT grad group is to assist participants in building a Life Worth Living through maintaining and refreshing skills practice, and through the supportive community of like-minded people also committed to using DBT skills. Sessions will include mindfulness practice, member check-in and sharing of skills used in their daily lives, time for group support and problem solving of how to apply skills to situations that members bring up, review of skills, and closing reflections.
What is DBT?
Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) is a blend of several types of therapy and approaches to wellness. It incorporates
- Cognitive Behavioral Therapy,
- mindfulness approaches from Zen Buddhism, and
- a philosophical approach called dialectics, which is built on the idea that everything is connected, so we need to consider behaviors and experiences in context.
4 Skills Modules
Mindfulness skills help us to be aware of what is happening in the moment. The more we are able to be present the better we are at problem solving, attending to our relationships, and meeting our needs.
Relationships are hard and most of us learned problematic ways of getting our needs met or communicating our feelings, which makes them even harder! Interpersonal effectiveness skills help us learn how to ask for what we need, how to say "no," and how to make repairs when we need to.
Emotions are messengers that are designed to help us engage and respond to our environments effectively. In this module, you'll learn where emotions come from, how they affect the body, and how to gain more mastery over your feelings.
No matter how skillful we are, we will encounter struggles and discomfort. Distress tolerance skills are designed to help us sail through turbulent times without drowning. You'll learn skills for radical acceptance and crisis survival that will help you feel empowered to live more fully, without fear of the next big wave.
